Stray Dogs and Sanctuary: My Journey in Thailand

In the heart of Thailand, my wife Jessica and I dedicated years of our lives to help dog shelters. Our goal was clear: to help the stray animals that roamed the streets and to find a sustainable solution to the stray problem. However, our experience with these shelters unveiled a side of the animal rescue world that was both disheartening and eye-opening.

From the outside, these shelters appeared to be sanctuaries of compassion and care. But behind closed doors, a different story unfolded. The owners, often expatriates, held an air of superiority over the local Thai people. They would speak poorly of them in private, yet wear masks of politeness when interactions were unavoidable. This duality was troubling, as it showed a deep-seated lack of respect for the very community they claimed to serve.

Long-term volunteers, including myself, were often treated poorly. Despite our unwavering commitment and hard work, we were subjected to dismissive attitudes and unreasonable demands. The shelters, which should have been places of solidarity and shared mission, became environments of tension and mistrust. 

Despite these challenges, my admiration for the Thai people only grew. They are among the most friendly and hospitable individuals I have ever encountered. Their culture and approach to dogs are different from what many Westerners might expect, and it's crucial to understand and respect these differences. Thai street dogs are not European lapdogs; they have adapted to a different lifestyle and environment.

Housing dogs in cages for the rest of their lives is not a solution. It's a temporary fix that ignores the root of the problem. Thai street dogs are resilient and independent. They thrive in their own way, and it's our responsibility to find ways to coexist with them harmoniously. This belief is at the core of our spay and release approach, which we championed in Thailand and continue to advocate for at our new sanctuary.

In the end, our experience in Thailand taught us invaluable lessons about cultural sensitivity, the importance of ethical treatment of both animals and people, and the need for genuine compassion in animal rescue. As we move forward with our sanctuary, we carry these lessons with us, committed to creating a space where both animals and humans are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
